P.C. Hooftstraat
Whoever has money goes into the P.C. Hooftstraat shopping. The P.C. Hooftstraat is known for its expensive stores and big brands. Chanel, Hermes, Cartier, Hugo Boss and Armani; you come across them all. The stores that are there have either a big name or are characterized by excellent customer-friendliness. The Oger gentleman’s shop is famous, where the rich have had their suits tailored for years. It is therefore not surprising that you will also spot many celebrities while walking through this street.
Kalverstaat and Leidsestraat
Not for nothing are these two streets at Monopoly the streets where you pay the most money for. Kalverstraat and Leidseplein are the most important shopping streets in Amsterdam and perhaps the Netherlands. All major brands have their own store here and almost all major retail chains are represented there. It is therefore always very busy. The street is filled with hordes of tourists every moment of the day. You will not come across any special or unique stores, but there is a huge selection of different stores to be found.
The Nine Streets
The Nine Streets is a really hip and upcoming shopping area in Amsterdam. The area runs from the Gasthuismolensteeg to the Wijde Heisteeg to the Runstraat and back to the Reestraat. In the area there are mainly nice little shops. You hardly come across large chains here. Many young designers, shops full of gadgets, beautiful clothing stores and so on. If you do not like the standard chains, you can certainly enjoy yourself here. In addition to the many shops you will also find small bistros and coffee shops.
Waterlooplein
For nice second-hand items you come to Waterlooplein. Every day, except on Sundays, there is a large flea market on Waterlooplein. At this flea market you will find the nicest old stuff and trash cans. Old plates or books, special vintage clothing or beautiful trinkets from grandmother’s time. On the Waterlooplein it is a nice mess of old and new and art and kitsch. A nice place to score an original souvenir or a few old army chests.
Albert Cuyp
The Albert Cuyp market has been around for more than a hundred years and is a true concept in Amsterdam. Every day, except on Sundays, you will find this cozy market in the heart of Amsterdam. There is a wide variety of fresh products available, such as flowers, fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and so on. There are stalls with tasty Dutch cheeses and there are also various stands with tasty snacks such as Churros and other delicacies. Very nice to stroll along while the market vendors praised their wares loudly with a heavy Amsterdam accent.
The Spiegelkwartier
The Spiegelkwartier is a neighborhood full of art and antique stores. In this beautiful old neighborhood opposite the Rijksmuseum there are more than a hundred shops where you can find the most beautiful paintings and antique furniture. Are you looking for an undiscovered Rembrandt or for that one special antique chandelier, then you’ve definitely come to the right place.
Villa Arena and Amsterdamse Poort
Outside the city center you will also find a few large shopping centers. Various shops can be found at Amsterdam Bijlmer station and the Arena. Villa Arena is a large shopping center with mainly interior stores. The building has a special design with lots of glass and steel. Some large chains such as Decathlon can be found on the square next to the Arena. If you walk a bit further you will arrive at the Amsterdamse Poort. Again a large shopping center with various stores. Because you also walk into one of the most multicultural neighborhoods in the Netherlands from here, the offer is not only typically Dutch, such as Hema, but also culturally diverse. You will find here the African dresses next to the Hema smoked sausage.
