Where Is Amsterdam Central Station?

If you are visiting Amsterdam for the first time, one of the easiest landmarks to remember is Amsterdam Centraal Station. The station is located at the northern edge of Amsterdam’s historic city centre, directly beside the River IJ.

Where exactly is Amsterdam Central Station?

Amsterdam Centraal is at Stationsplein, 1012 AB Amsterdam. It is only a short walk from many of the city’s main attractions and shopping streets.

The station sits on an artificial island in the IJ. When you leave through the city-centre side, you are immediately facing the historic centre of Amsterdam. The famous Damrak begins near the station and leads south towards Dam Square.

If you walk through the station towards the IJ side, you reach the waterfront and the free ferries to Amsterdam-Noord.

How far is Central Station from the city centre?

Despite being at the northern edge of the historic centre, Amsterdam Centraal is very central.

From the station, you can walk to:

  • Dam Square: about 5–10 minutes
  • Damrak: immediately outside the main entrance
  • Jordaan: roughly 15–20 minutes
  • Anne Frank House: roughly 20 minutes
  • Museumplein: around 25–30 minutes

Walking times vary depending on your exact destination and route.

Getting around from Amsterdam Centraal

Central Station is also Amsterdam’s main public-transport hub. Trains connect Amsterdam with destinations throughout the Netherlands and with international cities, while metro, tram, bus and ferry connections make it easy to continue your journey around the city.

The metro station is directly underneath/adjacent to Centraal Station, while tram connections are available around Stationsplein. The ferries to Amsterdam-Noord leave from the IJ side of the station.

What does Amsterdam Central Station look like?

The station building itself is one of Amsterdam’s notable landmarks. It was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum, and Amsterdam Centraal opened in 1889. The building was constructed on three artificial islands in the IJ and stands on thousands of wooden piles.

So if someone asks “Where is the central station in Amsterdam?”, the simple answer is:

Amsterdam Centraal is at Stationsplein, right at the northern edge of Amsterdam’s historic city centre, beside the River IJ.
